The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has expressed its willingness to support Benin in organizing a peaceful and inclusive electoral process.
During a meeting between Titus Osundina, UNDP Resident Representative in Benin, and the Ombudsman of the Republic, the two parties discussed ways to prevent electoral violence that unfortunately marked previous elections.
The Ombudsman of Benin, responsible for ensuring the smooth running of elections and resolving disputes, stressed the importance of prior consultations with all stakeholders involved.
UNDP is offering to provide its expertise and logistical support to the Ombudsman of the Republic for the implementation of these consultations and the prevention of conflicts.
It must be recalled that the electoral violence that marred the 2019 legislative elections and the 2021 presidential election left deep scars on Beninese society. The convictions of opposition politicians, such as Reckya Madougou and Joël Aïvo, also contributed to a climate of political tension.
