World leaders and heads of government are gathering at the United Nations headquarters in New York today for the annual General Assembly, coinciding with the organisation’s 80th anniversary.
The milestone comes at a time of mounting crises across both the global south and north, from conflict and poor governance to financial instability and climate change. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged leaders to recommit to ending wars, tackling inequality, and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
Guterres also emphasized the need to defend gender equality, empower youth, and reshape the global financial system to better serve vulnerable nations. This year’s assembly will also officially recognize the two-state solution in addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict.
