Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was placed under house arrest on Friday, a day after elections in which early results showed President Yoweri Museveni with a commanding lead.

Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, is seeking to extend his 40-year grip on power amid accusations of brutal repression of the opposition during the campaign period.

The government also imposed an internet blackout in the days leading up to the vote, drawing criticism from rights groups and opposition supporters.

With about a quarter of the votes counted, the Electoral Commission said Museveni had secured 76.25 percent, compared to Bobi Wine’s 19.85 percent.
