The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to American citizens ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protests set for Monday, October 20, 2025. The demonstrations are expected to take place around Eagle Square and the Central Business District in Nigeria’s capital.
In a statement on its official website, the Embassy warned that the protests could lead to traffic disruptions, roadblocks, and potential violence. It advised U.S. citizens to avoid protest areas, minimize movement, and remain vigilant throughout the day.
Organizers are demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since 2021 despite multiple court rulings ordering his release. Kanu’s arrest and the government’s designation of IPOB as a terrorist group have long fueled tensions in southeastern Nigeria.
While the protest is billed as peaceful, the Embassy cautioned that clashes between demonstrators and security forces could occur, urging all citizens to exercise maximum caution and stay informed through official updates.
