Togo has announced a significant increase in the number of municipal councilor seats for its upcoming local elections scheduled for July 10, 2025.
A recent government decree puts the number of councilors to be elected at 1,667—up from 1,527 in the last election held in 2019, marking an addition of 140 new seats.
While the government sees this as a step toward greater representation, some opposition parties argue the decision came too late in the electoral timeline.
They are calling for a postponement of the vote to ensure all stakeholders have adequate time to prepare under the revised framework.
