Togo’s National Gendarmerie has publicly refuted allegations circulating on social media that social activist Grâce Bikonibidjaté Koumayi was raped and mistreated during her arrest on June 6.
In a statement released over the weekend, security officials described the claims as “completely unfounded,” insisting that no such abuses occurred while she was in custody.
The allegations had sparked public concern and online debate, prompting calls for transparency and accountability. Koumayi, known for her outspoken activism, has been a prominent voice on governance and social issues.
The Gendarmerie maintains that due process was followed, while civil society groups continue to demand an independent investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding her arrest.
