Togo’s capital, Lomé, witnessed heightened tensions on Thursday as security forces clashed with protesters demanding political change. The demonstrations, now in their second day, are part of a three-day nationwide protest denouncing governance under Faure Gnassingbé.
Protesters gathered at key locations such as Bè, Colombe de la Paix, and Boulevard de l’Oti, despite a government ban on public gatherings. Police reportedly fired teargas to disperse the crowds and made several arrests.
The protest movement—spearheaded by young people, opposition parties, and civil society groups—continues to gain traction amid growing frustration over political repression and rights abuses.
Organisers say they will not back down, insisting the protests are peaceful and calling for the president’s resignation from the Council of Ministers.
