Vote counting is underway in Togo following the July 17 municipal elections, which were marked by a notably low voter turnout across the country.
Roughly 4 million registered voters were expected to cast their ballots, but many stayed away following boycott calls from civil society and opposition groups. The polls took place amid ongoing political tensions and calls for reform.
Opposition figure Nathaniel Olympio, speaking for the “Hands Off My Constitution” movement, criticized the election process and reiterated demands for President Faure Gnassingbé’s resignation.
Despite the elections proceeding, political unrest appears far from over, with many in the opposition questioning the legitimacy of the vote.
