The government of Togo has unveiled a new conditional cash transfer scheme, pledging 18 billion CFA francs to support over 31,000 vulnerable households nationwide.
The initiative, backed by the World Bank and French Cooperation, targets communities in Lomé, Maritime, Kara, Savanes, Plateaux, and Centrale regions. It aims to build long-term resilience and reinforce social safety nets originally introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the timing of the announcement—amid growing socio-political unrest—has led some observers to question whether the move is a form of political appeasement.
