In Togo, the government held a solemn ceremony to honor soldiers who lost their lives during Operation Koundjoaré, as the nation continues to face jihadist threats in its northern regions.
President of the Togolese Transitional Council, Faure Gnassingbé, posthumously awarded fallen soldiers the rank of Knight of the Order of Mono, while wounded personnel received the Medal of Valour. He praised their courage and called their sacrifice a symbol of national unity and resilience.
Operation Koundjoaré, launched in 2018, is Togo’s main military effort to counter terrorist activity along its borders with Burkina Faso and Benin. The initiative has been strengthened with legal backing, increased troop deployment, and improved military equipment.
Despite deadly attacks in recent years, the government says the operation remains crucial in protecting communities and combating jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, while support programs continue for affected soldiers and families.
