The Togolese government has declared last month’s nationwide protests illegal and announced plans to prosecute those behind the demonstrations, including diaspora-based social media influencers.

During a media briefing on Wednesday, officials justified the state’s response, citing national laws that prohibit public demonstrations to prevent chaos and unrest.

The protests, held on June 26, 27, and 28, drew attention to political grievances, but authorities maintain that the gatherings posed a threat to public order.

As tensions rise, the government’s firm stance signals a continued crackdown on dissent, both at home and abroad.
