In Togo, civil society and human rights groups have announced a major protest for Saturday, August 16, under the banner “Togo Death Day.” The demonstration is intended to denounce what organizers call the systematic denial of fundamental freedoms, including peaceful assembly.
The announcement comes after authorities banned their planned rally in Lomé for the third time.
The M66 movement, which openly opposes the current regime, is leading the call for spontaneous nationwide protests, marking what they describe as a new phase in the fight for free expression and the right to demonstrate.
