In a major leadership transition, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has handed over the chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone.
The handover occurred during the ECOWAS Heads of State Summit held in Abuja, where leaders reviewed regional peace, security, and economic development. Tinubu, who served as chair since 2023, called for unity and resilience amid mounting political and security challenges in the subregion.
President Bio pledged to build on the bloc’s gains and lead efforts to strengthen democracy, regional integration, and collective security across West Africa.
