Several thousand people flooded the streets of Yopougon this weekend in a show of opposition to President Alassane Ouattara’s bid for a fourth term. The peaceful rally was organised by the united front of the African Peoples’ Party – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) and the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI).
Marchers called for the reinstatement of opposition members removed from the electoral roll and accused the government of undermining democratic rights. Placards and chants echoed a shared demand: free and fair elections.
Political analyst Djabiga Soro described the mobilisation as unprecedented, noting its scale could pressure authorities to address the opposition’s grievances ahead of October’s presidential vote.
