In West Africa, online freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed in many countries, yet it faces increasing threats from government repression and the misuse of laws targeting hate speech and fake news. These measures have led to arbitrary arrests, internet shutdowns, and other forms of censorship.
In this context, our guests today will explore how online freedom of expression can be harnessed to promote truth-telling, enhance democratic engagement, and strengthen citizens’ participation across West Africa, particularly through the use of new and emerging technologies.
