Sudan’s military-led government has returned to the capital, Khartoum, after nearly three years operating from Port Sudan.
Prime Minister Kamil Idris said the “government of hope” is back and will focus on restoring electricity, water, healthcare and education after years of war.
The army was driven out of Khartoum in 2023 during fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, before recapturing the city last March. The UN says about five million people fled the capital at the height of the conflict. Much of Khartoum lies in ruins, with basic services barely functioning.
Idris called 2026 a “year of peace” for Sudan. At least 150,000 people have been killed and around 12 million displaced in what the UN describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
The war began after a power struggle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. Both sides are accused of atrocities and foreign involvement, including allegations against the UAE, which it denies has fuelled the conflict
