The chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, stated on Monday that any resolution to the war excluding the dismantling and disarmament of the Rapid Support Forces is unacceptable.
He made this remark in Port Sudan during an event honouring Sudan Liberation Movement martyrs.
Led by Darfur governor Minni Arko Minnawi, the movement has fought the Rapid Support Forces since the war broke out in April 2023.
Several armed groups from Darfur, formerly part of peace agreements with Khartoum, joined the army in the conflict.
The war has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, caused thousands of deaths, and displaced around 13 million people.
