In Darfur, families are sheltering in abandoned buildings with little water or sanitation, while the war—now in its third year—has driven over 873,000 refugees into Chad, where one in three people is now a refugee. Aid workers also warn of a deadly cholera outbreak, with nearly 100,000 cases since last year, including infections in refugee camps.
The UN Mine Action Service has detected anti-personnel mines in civilian areas of Khartoum, adding to the dangers. With Sudan’s humanitarian appeal only 23% funded, the UN is calling for urgent assistance and a ceasefire to address what it calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
