According to the United Nations, Coastal environments host a range of infrastructure, including the landing points for telecommunications, and ecosystem services, and provide shelter for millions of people worldwide.
However, in countries of West Africa such as Senegal,Benin, Ghana, Liberia, and the Gambia, coastal erosion is powering a hidden crisis.
In Togo, coastal erosion is increasingly washing away farmlands along the seashore, threatening vegetable farmers’ production.
Farmers in the coastal country are bearing the full brunt of this natural phenomenon, which is worsened by climate change.
