South African President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed former opposition leader John Steenhuisen as minister of agriculture, forming a coalition cabinet that includes the Democratic Alliance and other parties.
This coalition was necessary after the African National Congress lost its majority in the May 29 election for the first time in three decades. Ramaphosa’s cabinet retains Enoch Godongwana as finance minister and Ronald Lamola as minister of international relations and cooperation.
Energy responsibilities were moved to Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, while Gwede Mantashe remains minister of mineral and petroleum resources. The new government aims to revive the economy, repair infrastructure, and address unemployment.
