Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has issued a clarion call for renewed unity within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). While acknowledging the bloc’s historic role in promoting peace and regional development, she expressed concern over growing divisions.
Sirleaf noted that ECOWAS has long been a model for regional cooperation in Africa, helping to stabilize economies and prevent conflicts. However, recent trends show some member states moving in divergent directions.
She described this disunity as “most unfortunate,” warning that it threatens Africa’s broader goal of integration and collective advancement. Sirleaf urged leaders to recommit to the founding ideals of ECOWAS.
Her remarks serve as a timely reminder of the importance of regional solidarity in navigating the continent’s complex political and economic challenges.
