During an open debate at the United Nations Security Council, Sierra Leone’s progress in peacebuilding and conflict prevention was highlighted by the Executive Secretary of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, Madam Hawa Samai.
The event, led by Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, showcased the country’s transformation from a brutal civil war to a model of post-conflict stability. Madam Samai praised the UNSC’s commitment to global peacebuilding and emphasized the importance of inclusive strategies and political will in Sierra Leone’s journey over the past 22 years.
She further highlighted the role of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, established in 2002, in healing the nation and leading to significant reforms. Additionally, she said the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, formed in 2020, has been crucial in preventing and managing conflicts through early warning mechanisms and peace coalitions.
The debate underscored the vital role of women, youth, and local communities in sustaining peace, positioning Sierra Leone as a model for other post-conflict nations.
