In Sierra Leone, several newspapers have been sanctioned for defamation and inaccurate reporting by the Independent Media Commission (IMC).
The fines target publications accused of breaching provisions of the IMC Act 2020 and existing media regulations. Specific cases cited include defamation, denial of the right of reply and the publication of unsubstantiated claims. The IMC also ordered the affected newspapers to retract the disputed reports.
The sanctions are expected to place additional financial pressure on media outlets already operating on limited resources.
The development comes amid controversy over the IMC’s recent decision to increase annual licence renewal fees from NLe1,000 to NLe2,500, a move editors say threatens the survival of the industry as advertising revenue declines and operational costs rise.
