Sierra Leone is presiding over the United Nations Security Council for November 2025, marking a significant moment for the country’s global diplomatic role. On Monday, November 17, President Julius Maada Bio chaired a high-level session on the theme “Threats to International Peace and Security: Conflict-Related Food Insecurity.”

In his address, President Bio — who also serves as President of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government — warned that food insecurity has become both a driver and a devastating consequence of armed conflict worldwide. He stressed that instability, displacement, and disrupted food systems continue to endanger millions.

His leadership of the Council this month underscores Sierra Leone’s expanding role in regional and international security efforts. It also highlights the country’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian crises facing the West African sub-region.

Here is an extract from President Maada Bio’s speech.
