Sierra Leone is marking this year’s Armed Forces Day with heightened national significance, as the government pays tribute to fallen heroes and distinguished military personnel.
For the first time, the country is formally recognizing foreign troops who played a decisive role in ending the decade-long civil war. Those honored served under the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group and the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone.
During a ceremony scheduled for Thursday, President Julius Maada Bio is expected to confer some of the nation’s highest honors on individuals recognized for bravery, sacrifice, and exceptional service during one of the country’s most challenging periods.
The commemoration comes at a time of renewed concern over unconstitutional military takeovers in parts of West Africa, with security experts urging armed forces across the region to remain steadfast in their constitutional mandate.
