The Sierra Leonean Ministry of Health says the recently reported cutaneous skin ulcer outbreak in Bombali District is under control, with emergency response measures actively in place.
According to the Ministry, the outbreak is currently limited to the Northern Province and marks the first recorded case of its kind in the country’s history.
Authorities in Freetown announced the epidemic last week, nearly a month after Sierra Leone declared an end to its Mpox outbreak on December 17, 2025.
Health officials continue efforts to prevent further spread of the disease, which mainly affects children, with 267 suspected contacts under review, according to Herald Thomas, Lead for Risk Communication at the Ministry of Health.
