Rural communities in Senegal and The Gambia are joining forces to confront the growing challenge of digital violence, which increasingly targets women and young girls. The threat—ranging from online harassment to the non-consensual sharing of personal content—has quietly spread across rural areas, where limited awareness and protection mechanisms leave victims particularly vulnerable.

Community representatives from both countries met in the Senegalese village of Lenguedie for a cross-border dialogue focused on strengthening collective action. The gathering highlighted how shared experiences and joint strategies can help curb a problem that often crosses borders just as easily as the digital tools that enable it.

The initiative is supported by Tostan Senegal, Tostan Gambia, and UN Women, and forms part of activities marking the end of the global 16 Days of Activism campaign. Organizers emphasized the need for long-term, community-driven efforts to address the unique forms of digital harm faced in rural settings.

Participants stressed that tackling digital violence requires both education and protection—empowering women and girls to navigate online spaces safely while ensuring strong community support systems. The collaboration marks a significant step toward building safer digital environments across the Senegambia region.
