The Constitutional Council’s repeal of President Macy Sall’s decree two weeks ago postponing the presidential election.
The Council’s seven wise men in a statement on Thursday handed down a ruling which is in contrast with Sall’s decree and the bill passed by lawmakers setting December 15 as the new date for the polls.
The nation’s highest judicial body acknowledged that the elections cannot be held on February 25 as mandated by the electoral calendar but suggests a date earlier than the December deadline.
According to Saïdou Nourou Dia a Senegalese electoral expert, setting a new date within a reasonable timeframe requires dialogue beforehand.
Recall that the Judges had received requests from opposition candidates to keep the presidential election to 25 February
