President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal is set to embark on his first official working and friendly visit to the Sahel region this Thursday.
Faye will begin his tour in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, where he is scheduled to meet with interim President Captain Ibrahim Traore. This visit is a key component of his broader tour of the subregion.
The mission to Burkina Faso is particularly significant, as it carries messages from several regional leaders who have urged Faye to engage with the coup-led states seeking to distance themselves from ECOWAS.
Both Nigeria’s President and ECOWAS Chairperson Bola Tinubu, as well as President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, have called upon Diomaye Faye to take a leading role in mending the strained relations between Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger with the subregional organization.
