It has been established that human exploitation is on the rise in the gold mining region of Kedougou, in south-eastern Senegal. This was contained in the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report 2024.
The report explains that traffickers mostly exploit women and girls as young as 12 in sex trafficking, noting that most victims come from Nigeria.
It however stated that women and girls from Senegal, Mali, Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are also affected.
