Authorities in Senegal are calling on residents of low-lying coastal areas in Dakar’s municipalities of Mbao, Thiaroye-sur-Mer, and Hann Bel-Air to relocate as the sea continues to advance, threatening homes and livelihoods.
Officials warn these communities are among the most at risk from severe coastal erosion, a problem that has worsened in recent years due to rising sea levels and climate change.
Speaking to state media, Director of Meteorology Aïda Diongue Niang said the government can no longer adapt or build sufficient defenses for these sandy, erosion-prone zones. The call for evacuation comes as experts push for urgent, long-term strategies to protect lives and infrastructure from the encroaching Atlantic.
