The brutal killing of an 8-year-old beggar in Koungheul, central Senegal, has sparked outrage and renewed debate on the practice of child begging.

The victim, Abdou Khadr Seck, was reportedly deprived of food and beaten to death by his guardian. A medical examination confirmed visible traces of violence on his body.

Senegal’s National Human Rights Commission has described the act as barbaric and is calling for a full investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

The Commission is also urging stronger action to end the exploitation of children through begging, a widespread issue that has long drawn concern from rights groups.
