Senegal’s public prosecutor has appealed to the Supreme Court, seeking a review of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s defamation conviction.
Sonko was found guilty while in opposition of defaming former Tourism Minister Mame Mbaye Niang, a ruling that barred him from contesting the 2024 presidential election.
The appeal could pave the way for a new trial, reopening a politically sensitive legal case.
Senegalese criminal lawyer Professor Ndiack Fall has provided analysis on the legal implications and procedure surrounding the appeal.
