Senegal has officially launched this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, marking the start of a nationwide push to raise awareness and promote human rights. The campaign was inaugurated on Tuesday with a ceremony on Gorée Island, a historic symbol of resilience and memory.
Observed globally from November 25 to December 10, the initiative traces its roots to the Women’s Global Leadership Institute, which established the movement in 1991. Senegal’s commemoration highlights the deep connection between ending gender-based violence and advancing fundamental human rights.
The government’s renewed commitment aims to strengthen advocacy, expand community engagement, and reinforce national efforts to protect women and girls.
