Senegal’s government is cracking down on unregulated motorcycle taxi operations, giving riders a three-month deadline to register their vehicles with the Mines Department in Dakar.
The process requires a Certificate of Circulation, validated sales documents, and a copy of the seller’s ID or passport, costing up to 28,000 CFA francs. These measures have sparked protests from riders who see them as a threat to their livelihoods.
Despite opposition, some motorcyclists have complied, obtaining license plates and documentation to operate legally. The government remains firm, citing public safety and better transport regulation as key objectives.
