Leaders of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) are meeting in Mali’s capital, Bamako, for a high-level summit to assess the bloc’s first year as a formal confederation.
The two-day meeting is reviewing progress on security cooperation, diplomatic coordination, and joint development initiatives across member states.
The summit is also expected to pave the way for the appointment of a new president of the organisation.
Discussions are taking place against a backdrop of persistent security threats in the Sahel and shifting regional dynamics following the bloc’s withdrawal from ECOWAS.
