In Nigeria, a former senior Customs officer is calling for the reinstatement of capital punishment for drug-related offences.

Ibrahim Etsu, who once headed the Customs’ Drug Control Unit, says the death penalty previously served as an effective deterrent, citing a sharp decline in drug trafficking and consumption during its enforcement.

He argues that reviving the measure could help combat rising insecurity, which he links to the surge in drug abuse across the country.
