Police in South Africa fired rubber bullets and tear gas on to disperse protesters in Johannesburg after crowds pushed into the G20 summit’s security zone.

The demonstrators, led by the anti-migrant group Operation Dudula, said they wanted to use the global gathering to highlight domestic challenges such as crime, unemployment, and what they describe as unchecked illegal immigration.

The group said many South Africans were frustrated and “tired of foreigners” entering the country, accusing President Cyril Ramaphosa of failing to act.

The Protesters also complained that the designated demonstration area—about one kilometre from the Nasrec Expo Centre where world leaders were meeting—rendered their action “meaningless,” arguing that delegates could not hear their message.
