Opposition leader Tidjane Thiam of Côte d’Ivoire’s PDCI party has called for national dialogue ahead of the country’s crucial October presidential election.
In a video message marking the 65th independence anniversary, Thiam condemned the ongoing clampdown on civil society and political activists. He urged the government to create an atmosphere of peace and inclusion to avoid deepening political tensions.
His message followed President Alassane Ouattara’s address, where the incumbent touted economic progress and sought support for a fourth term.
Thiam warned that the ruling RHDP’s current approach risks destabilising Côte d’Ivoire and undermining regional peace.
