Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, as is maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Your eyes are an important part of your health.
Most people rely on their eyes to see and make sense of the world around them. But some eye diseases can lead to vision loss, so it is important to identify and treat eye diseases as early as possible.
Several eye diseases are prevalent in West Africa, including Onchocerciasis, Uveitis, glaucoma, and trachoma. However, Cataracts are also a significant cause of blindness in the region, particularly among older adults.
Infact Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss globally, and while they’re often associated with aging, there’s a lot more to understand—from risk factors and prevention to treatment and recovery.
Sub-Saharan Africa bears a disproportionate amount of the world’s blindness and the proportion of blind people in this region is increasing at a faster rate than in other parts of the world.
Let’s take the conversation further as we bring on board our Guest Dr. Joseph Eziechila, an Ophthalmic surgeon with the Federal Medical Centre Abuja.
