In Nigeria, a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that $2.88 billion (₦2.23 trillion) was paid as ransom to kidnappers between May 2023 and April 2024.
According to the NBS’s Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey, released on Tuesday, 91% of kidnapping incidents during this period were financially motivated. The alarming statistics highlight the growing insecurity in the country and the financial burden it places on citizens.
The report has reignited calls for the Nigerian government to intensify efforts in addressing kidnapping and improving overall security measures nationwide.
