Amnesty International is urging Nigeria’s federal government to strengthen school safety measures following the reopening of 47 unity schools previously shut due to insecurity.

The Ministry of Education announced that the schools have resumed classes, citing improved security conditions, though it provided limited details on specific protective measures in place.

Rights groups, education stakeholders, and parents have expressed concern, warning that reopening schools without robust safeguards could expose learners to renewed risks.

Amnesty International Nigeria’s Country Director, Isa Sanusi, says it would be disastrous for students to return to school without an effective security emergency and response plan.
