As Nigeria marked its annual Democracy Day on June 12, the government used the occasion to reaffirm its dedication to democratic principles. During a commemorative event in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, emphasized the country’s resolve to uphold civilian rule, especially as military takeovers resurface in parts of West and Central Africa.

Akume reflected on the historical significance of June 12, a date that symbolizes Nigerians’ long struggle for democracy. He noted how citizens from all walks of life once united to demand justice and democratic governance—an effort that continues to inspire the nation’s democratic journey.

The government’s message served as a reminder of Nigeria’s leadership role in safeguarding democracy within a region increasingly threatened by authoritarian shifts.
