The European Union has raised fresh concerns over the growing influence of foreign-backed disinformation in Nigeria’s political landscape. Speaking at a workshop for diplomatic correspondents in Abuja on December 2, EU officials said the country’s fragile security environment and deepening ethnic and religious divisions are being exploited by external actors.
According to the EU, increasingly sophisticated manipulation campaigns are eroding public trust and undermining democratic institutions. With Nigeria’s 2027 general elections approaching, the bloc warns that unchecked disinformation could significantly distort civic engagement and electoral integrity.
The EU is urging stronger monitoring, collaboration, and public awareness efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy from these escalating information threats.
