The commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the abduction of 276 students from Government Girls’ Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, took place on Sunday with prayers for the safe return of the 92 girls still unaccounted for.
Speakers at the inter-faith prayer service expressed mixed reactions to the events since 2014, with a demand for explanations on why some girls remain unrecovered while others have been freed. Despite efforts by both federal and state governments, as well as religious leaders, to secure the release of the remaining girls, their fate remains uncertain.
The ceremony also highlighted the transformation of the school, which has been renovated into a non-boarding school, with plans to revert it to its original boarding status. Extra security measures have been implemented to protect students and residents against further attacks.
According to statistics provided by parents of the abducted schoolgirls, out of the 271 students kidnapped, 57 escaped shortly after the abduction, 103 were released through federal government intervention, and 20 were freed through state government efforts. However, 92 students are still in captivity, prompting ongoing efforts to secure their release
