Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, met with his Beninese counterpart, Olushegun Adjadi Bakar, in Abuja on Thursday to discuss the foiled coup attempt that shook Cotonou on Sunday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 55th ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council.
During the talks, Minister Tuggar highlighted that many of Nigeria’s security challenges originate from beyond its borders. He stressed that instability in one country inevitably affects neighbours, making coordinated regional action essential for long-term stability.
Benin’s Foreign Minister, Adjadi Bakar, expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s swift support after Benin requested ECOWAS intervention to counter the coup plotters. He emphasized that the intervention was carried out without risking civilian lives, aligning with regional security principles.
Bakar assured that the security situation in Benin is now fully under control. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation as ECOWAS works to prevent further destabilizing events across the region.
