Nigeria and the United States are deepening security cooperation as Abuja confronts growing threats from armed groups in the North-West and extremist networks across the Lake Chad Basin. The move reflects Washington’s renewed engagement in West African stability.

President Bola Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s delegation to a newly established Joint Working Group with the US. The platform is expected to enhance coordination on counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and diplomatic strategy.

The initiative also aims to streamline humanitarian responses in conflict-affected regions, where displacement and community vulnerability continue to rise. Both countries say the framework offers a more structured and sustained approach to addressing shared security concerns.

For Nigeria, the partnership arrives at a critical moment as authorities seek stronger international support to manage escalating violence and rebuild public confidence in national security efforts.
