Niger’s transitional authorities have issued a stern warning to French nuclear company Orano, threatening legal action after the discovery of abandoned radioactive material in the country’s north. The Minister of Justice announced the move on Tuesday, following the uncovering of 400 barrels of radioactive core samples left behind in the Arlit department.
According to officials, the highly toxic material poses a severe danger to nearby communities, with concerns that any explosion or leakage could endanger thousands of lives. The government has condemned the company’s negligence, calling it a violation of public safety and environmental standards.
Niger says it will pursue legal complaints if Orano fails to take immediate responsibility for the cleanup and disposal of the hazardous waste.
The incident has fueled growing tensions between the transitional authorities and the French company, further straining an already fragile relationship over control and management of Niger’s mineral resources.
