The pollution of the Niger River has reached critical levels, severely impacting water quality, according to Mali’s energy and water minister.

During a recent field visit, the minister expressed concern over illegal gold panning activities near the Djoliba River, which contribute significantly to contamination.

Authorities have vowed to impose strict penalties on those responsible, aiming to protect the river, a vital water source for millions of Malians.
