Niger’s Bar Association has declared a two-day strike for August 14 and 15 in protest against the transitional government’s dissolution of several justice sector unions. At least three unions were disbanded following a recent public statement by the Minister of Justice.
The Bar Association has condemned the move as a severe setback for judicial independence and workers’ rights.
They argue the decision breaches the Charter of Refoundation, International Labour Organization Conventions 87 and 98, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
